Where is the world is Digital Signage?

It’s no secret that Samsung defined what the pro AV and consumer world both recognize as “Smart TV” definition as we know it. The SMART platform now carries through in the consumer, professional and even hospitality product lineups, and in the year ahead we’ll see this platform expand even further. In a hospitality environment, we’ll start to see TVs start to become the user interface that controls everything about the in-room guest experience from temperature and lighting controls, wake-up calls, restaurant and SPA/service reservations, room service ordering, guest check-out, and so much more. In the consumer lineup, Samsung will leverage its engineering strength to utilize the SMART platform to serve as the HUB for integrating things like lighting, security cameras, audio and of course your home entertainment solutions in a totally integrated way and of course they’ll do it right from your mobile device.

These are just two examples of how Samsung is taking its product development teams to task, not only do they manufacture every component from A to Z in their products rather than sourcing components from others to make their products, but they have a dedication to quality manufacturing and a level of excitement to be the market leader in every category they pursue and they do this by constantly being so forward-driven; staying ahead of the curve, anticipating market demands before they ask for it, creating solutions that lead the market.

Why is this so important for our reseller partners? In the pro AV industry where so many players are trying to break-into our space and take business from traditional integrators, they cannot afford to have their reputation jeopardized because of quality issues, or offering antiquated technology in a world where consumers are becoming increasingly aware of new technology with so much information at their fingertips online or that they may have seen from watching a media broadcast where digital signage technology is used to communicate all kinds of information. Choosing Samsung means resellers can instinctively operate with a level of confidence they’re making a solid choice to protect their reputation and their clients- and that’s important.

Digital signage has become so prevalent in the last decade that it is hard to walk through any public venue without seeing some form of digital signage in place. I am struggling to provide an example of DS popping up where traditionally I haven’t seen.

New technology being developed off the existing OLED technology. Customers are requesting these displays due to the true blacks, sharper images, lighter/flexible displays which is “opening up a new world of possibilities in signage design.” They can now be mounted in previously impossible forms and shapes and can take advantage of available spaces and locations that could not use traditional back-lit displays. They also promise undistorted images that can be viewed at any angle.

This technology shift is important for advancing the industry with forward-thinking products/formats/unique features that add value and improve digital signage as a whole.

At Almo, we are always bringing forth the cutting edge of new technologies as a result of the tight partner relationships that we form with our manufacturers.

With the advent of a flexible display the options for signage/TV or any content are limitless. Rather than think of this as something just to roll up and carry around, its more how the technology could be applied to other things. What if it could be mass produced at a cost almost as cheap as plastic, then it could pretty much be put on anything. It could replace billboards, advertisements on the sides of busses and trains, road signs, retail store signs. If it became inexpensive enough to produce on a large scale it could even end up going on the sides of everyday disposable products; for example a tv screen on your cereal box, a children’s book made entirely of OLED flexible “pages”, etc.
